Daniel Gillespie Clowes (born April 14, 1961 in Chicago ) is an American comic artist and screenwriter . He became known to a wider public through the film Ghost World , which is based on one of his comics.

Life

After graduating from high school in 1979, Clowes studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn , New York . After graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts , however, he did not find a job as an illustrator in New York .

From 1985 to 1989 he published stories and pictures in Cracked magazine , especially "The Uggly Family". In 1985, Clowes wrote and drew his first Lloyd Llewellyn story, which eventually became a six-volume comic book series (1986–1988, published by Fantagraphics Books ).

In 1989 Clowes published the first issue of the comic magazine Eightball at Fantagraphics , of which 23 issues have appeared to date and in which all of Clowes' books were initially published as sequels.

Clowes lives in Oakland, California with his wife Erika and son Charlie .

Awards

In addition to multiple nominations for the Harvey Awards , he won this award in 2005 in the categories of Best Writer and Best Single Issue or Story . He is also the recipient of several Eisner Awards and was nominated for an Academy Award for the best adapted screenplay ( Ghost World ).

Movies

Clowes has written scripts for two films based on his comics: Ghost World (2000, with Thora Birch , Scarlett Johansson and Steve Buscemi ) and Art School Confidential (2006, with John Malkovich and Anjelica Huston ). Both films were directed by Terry Zwigoff . Clowes is currently working on a script for The Death Ray, produced by Jack Black's Black and White Productions .
