Wilson - Der Weltverbesserer (Original title: Wilson ) is an American comic book adaptation by Craig Johnson from 2017. It is based on the comic book Wilson by Daniel Clowes , who also wrote the screenplay.

Wilson is a weird, neurotic outsider who lives alone. Although he approaches other people, he overwhelms his fellow human beings and upsets them after a short time. He only has a friendly relationship with the dog sitter Shelly, who now and then takes care of his dog Pepper. Wilson decides to change something about his current situation and is looking for his ex-wife Pee, whom he had last seen as a junkie. In fact, Pipi now lives under her real name Lynn and has her life largely under control. The two go out again.

At some point, Wilson finds out that Pipi did not abort their daughter, as she claimed when the two of them separated, but gave them up for adoption. Wilson manages to find out where Claire now lives. The two of them intercept their daughter together and spend time with her, albeit without their adoptive parents knowing about it. After Claire initially resisted, she enjoyed spending time with her birth parents.

During a visit to Lynn's sister Polly, however, the situation escalates when Lynn and Polly get into each other's hair and fight. Polly calls the police and Wilson is arrested. He is sentenced to several years in prison for child abduction . His daughter testified against him. He managed to integrate himself in prison and soon became a popular inmate.

Finally he is released and tries to pick up his dog from Shelly. But Pepper is different now. Eventually he begins a relationship with Shelly and also begins to reconnect with his daughter, who is expecting a child.

The film is based on Daniel Clowe's satirical, black-humored graphic novel Wilson about a weird outsider. Clowe, who became known to a wider audience through the film adaptation of his comic book Ghost World (2001), also wrote the script. Originally, Alexander Payne should take over the direction , which ultimately gave way to Craig Johnston, but the film remained as a producer. The film premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and was released in cinemas in the United States on March 24, 2017; the German theatrical release took place on June 29, 2017.

Reviews

The film was generally rated as mediocre. The portrayal of Wilson by Woody Harrelson , who also describes the character as one of his favorites, is seen as successful . This is how Patrick Heidmann from Epd Film discussed Wilson - the do-gooder with the following words:

“The fact that the last spark doesn’t really want to jump over and that Wilson’s path to later growing up is only slightly amused rather than fervently followed is mainly due to the production by Craig Johnson. While with " The Skeleton Twins " he managed to walk the tightrope between funny, annoying and tragic, "Wilson - Der Weltverbesserer" is now more of a collection of vignettes in which these moods do not always mix. That leads to wonderfully weird and comical scenes (with Margo Martindale as a date, among others), but there is a lack of emotional depth for more. Which is especially noticeable when Johnson and Clowes let a lot of sentimentality arise towards the end. "

Gisela Ostwald from Der Tagesspiegel also praised the portrayal of Woody Harrelson, describing the film as "shallower" than the original enriched with dark humor. The film would start as a satire and then get lost in melodrama.
