biography

Laura Dern was born as the second daughter of the actors Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd ; her great-grandfather George Henry Dern , child of German immigrants, was Secretary of War of the United States from 1933 to 1936 . She spent a large part of her childhood filming her parents' films before emulating them with small supporting roles in Joseph Sargent's action film The Tiger Chases the Pack and Martin Scorsese's drama Alice Doesn't Live Here (1974). After first experiences in front of the camera, Dern, who had studied acting with Lee Strasberg , reappeared in 1980 with a supporting role in Adrian Lynes Jeanie's Clique , in which she was seen alongside Jodie Foster . The breakthrough of the 1982 Miss Golden Globe came with the lead role in Joyce Chopra's youth film Threatening Whispers (1985), in which Laura Dern seduced her film partner Treat Williams as a freedom-loving 15-year-old suburban woman. She gained greater fame through her collaboration with David Lynch , who used her in his critical and popular hits Blue Velvet (1986), Wild at Heart (1990) and Inland Empire (2006).

The high point of her film career so far, however, marks Martha Coolidge's drama Die Lust der Schöne Rose (1991), in which she played alongside her mother. For her portrait of the 19-year-old titular heroine, who turned a small US southern town against her with her unconventional lifestyle in the 1930s, she was nominated for an Oscar in 1992 for best leading actress . A year later she received a Golden Globe for Robert Markowitz 's TV movie Afterburn , which is based on a true story . In the drama she can be seen as the widow of a US fighter pilot who uncovered a plot between the military and an aircraft manufacturer. Despite roles in Steven Spielberg's box office hit Jurassic Park and Clint Eastwood's Perfect World (both 1993), she was unable to build on these successes . In the following years she mainly worked on dramas under well-known directors such as Robert Altman , Alexander Payne and David Lynch, whose film Inland Empire (2006) - with herself in the highly acclaimed leading role - she co-produced.

In 2017, Dern won her first Emmy for the supporting role of the scheming Renata Klein in the miniseries Big Little Lies , after she had previously been nominated five times for the most important US television award, and in 2018 again the Golden Globe Award . Her biggest success in the cinema so far was the role of lawyer Nora Fanshaw in the tragic comedy Marriage Story . She received the Oscar , Golden Globe and BAFTA for best supporting actress for her performance .

Dern - the u. a. was dating fellow actors Jeff Goldblum , Kyle MacLachlan and Billy Bob Thornton - married long-time partner Ben Harper in December 2005 . The connection with the US musician resulted in two children. In 2010 she announced the divorce from him. In November 2010, she was honored with a star in the film category (6270 Hollywood Boulevard ) on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
