Afterburn in Carowinds near Charlotte , North Carolina , USA is a steel roller coaster of the Inverted Coaster model from the manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard , which was opened on March 20, 1999 in what was then Paramount's Carowinds as Top Gun - The Jet Coaster . It is located in the part of the amusement park that belongs to the state of South Carolina .

It has a height of 34 m, a length of 901 m, reaches a top speed of 100 km / h and is equipped with six inversions . Afterburn was originally intended to be thematized after the 1998 film Godzilla , but was then thematized after the film Top Gun due to the low success of the film . After the names of Paramount expired in 2007, the track had to be renamed. The train adorns a disused, seemingly armed F-14 Tomcat of the US Navy, which is attached to one of the support pillars between the rails.

journey

The journey begins with the train leaving the station and being pulled up the 34 m high lift hill. Once at the top, passengers can expect a predrop before the actual first drop . After leaving, the train goes through the loop , followed by a long straight in front of the Immelmann . Immediately afterwards follow the Zero-G-Roll , as well as the Batwing , which consists of two inversions. The route now leads over the foot of the lift hill before reaching the final inversion, the corkscrew . A helix closes the gap to the final brake.

Trains

Afterburn has two trains with eight cars each. Four people (one row) can be seated in each car. The passengers must be at least 1.37 m tall to be allowed to ride. Shoulder straps are used as a restraint system.
