Carowinds is a 160-acre theme park located off Interstate 77 in Charlotte , North Carolina . Although the park has its official address in North Carolina, it is on the state line between North and South Carolina . Part of the park is also located in Fort Mill , South Carolina. The park opened on March 31, 1973 and cost $ 70 million. The park was planned for four years by Charlotte businessman Earl Patterson Hall . He was at Disneyland in 1956 and from then dreamed of bringing the two states closer through such a park. Carowinds is owned and operated by the Cedar Fair Entertainment Company . There is also an 8,000-square-foot water park in Carolina Harbor that is included in the park entrance fee. The park has a Halloween event called SCarowinds and a winter event called WinterFest.
