The Disneyland Resort in Anaheim is one of the most visited leisure complexes in the world and consists of the two parks Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Park as well as several hotels and a shopping and restaurant complex. The resort is part of the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts division of the Walt Disney Company .

With an estimated 16.8 million visitors, Disneyland amusement park was the second most visited park in the world after Magic Kingdom in 2014 . Disneyland was founded by Walt Disney and opened on July 17, 1955. Disney's goal was to create a place where children and adults can have fun together.

Planning and construction

To get money for the project, Disney invented a television show Disneyland in the 1950s , which was broadcast on ABC . Today this station is also part of the Disney group .

Already in the planning phase after the Second World War it became clear that more space would be required for the park than on the site next to the Disney studios in Burbank , which was originally intended as a location for Disneyland .

After research by Stanford University , the site in Anaheim was selected, where walnuts and oranges were then grown. A new freeway connection to Los Angeles ensured that the park was easily accessible, and construction began on July 21, 1954.

After almost exactly a year and $ 17 million in investments , Disney Park was opened on July 17, 1955 by then California Governor Goodwin Knight . First-time attractions include Jungle Cruise and the Mark Twain Riverboat on the Rivers of America. The theme park was divided into five “countries”: Main Street USA, Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. The central part, Main Street, USA, represents the center of an American provincial town around 1910 and is modeled on Walt Disney's hometown of Marceline (Missouri) and in what was then Fort Collins . This imitation of nostalgic small-town architecture (on a slightly reduced scale) and its enormous success with the public later gave rise to the sometimes critical use of the term “Disneyland” in architectural criticism, for example in connection with the New Urbanism, which was coined by the Disney group, or the problem area of reconstruction .

Extensions

Since it opened, the “Magic Kingdom”, as Disneyland was quickly called, has been expanded several times. In 1966, New Orleans Square was one of the last changes under Disney's personal supervision. From the idea for the “ Pirates of the Caribbean ” attraction, which opened there in 1967, a series of films of the same name emerged from 2003 . A second major expansion, Critter Country , was created in 1972, initially under the name "Bear Country". Finally, in 1993, Mickey's Toontown gave the answer to the question of where Disney's comic book characters lived.

In addition to a number of hotels and restaurants that have supplemented Disneyland over the years , another complete park, Disney's California Adventure Park , was added in 2001 to complement the existing Disneyland . Together with the newly created Downtown Disney with shops, restaurants and hotels, a complete resort was created, comparable to the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida . After an increasing number of day guests had previously been welcomed, the marketing strategy was also changed and attempts are now being made to advertise the Disneyland Resort as a destination for multi-day vacation stays.

In 2019, the announced in 2015 is Star Wars Galaxy's Edge - theme park opened.
