The Disney California Adventure (until May 2010 "Disney's California Adventure Park") is a theme park of Walt Disney Company in Anaheim , California . Together with the nearby Disneyland amusement park, the park , which opened on February 8, 2001, is part of the Disneyland Resort . With an estimated 8.8 million visitors, the park was the tenth most visited theme park in the world in 2014.
Subject areas
The park is divided into six areas: Buena Vista Street & Sunshine Plaza , Paradise Pier , The Golden State , Hollywood Pictures Backlot , "A Bug's Land" and "Cars Land".
Buena Vista Street & Sunshine Plaza
The main entrance is on Buena Vista Street , reminiscent of the 1920s Los Angeles . Shortly after the entrance, the visitor must pass under a replica of the Golden Gate Bridge . The Buena Vista Street is the same concept as the Main Street in Disneyland and Magic Kingdom . It leads the visitor in the middle of the park past souvenir shops.
At the end of Buena Vista Street , the visitor comes to the center of the park called Sunshine Plaza. A replica of the California Zephyr can be found there. At the end of the path there is a fountain with a large metal sun. All other regions of the park can be reached from the Sunshine Plaza.
The Golden State
The Golden State is divided into five other areas: Condor Flats , Grizzly Peak Recreation Area , Golden Vine Winery , Bayside and Pacific Wharf .
The Condor Flats were modeled on the Mojave Desert . They contain the Soarin 'Over California attraction , which was also realized in the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World in Epcot. Modeled after California's national parks, Grizzly Peak Recreation Area is home to the river rafting attraction Grizzly River Run and the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail , with a playground and a bear - themed show . There is also a direct detour to the nearby Disney's Grand Californian Hotel . The Golden Vine Winery is modeled on the Napa Valley , which is famous for wine growing. In addition to wine tastings, visitors will find a changing exhibition in the Walt Disney Imagineering Blue Sky Cellar , which shows the planned innovations in the park. Bayside is named after the San Francisco Bay Area and it contains a small copy of the Palace of Fine Arts . The main attraction is a film called Golden Deams About California with Whoopi Goldberg in the lead role. Pacific Wharf is inspired by the sardine road , set in Monterey . In this area there are mainly various restaurants and food stands.
Hollywood Pictures backlot
The Hollywood Pictures Backlot is based on a backlot of a Hollywood film studio and has the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror as its main attraction . Other attractions include various 3D films and shows such as Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! , Disney's Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular or Muppet Vision 3-D . Both Muppet Vision 3-D and Twilight Zone Tower of Terror are copies of the attractions of the same name at Disney's Hollywood Studios .
Paradise Pier
The Paradise Pier is an artificial pier on a lake. It includes many classic showman-like thrill rides such as the roller coaster California Screamin ' , carousels , a teetering ship and others.
One section is modeled on the historic Route 66 . A highway that connected Chicago with California and was the main traffic axis of the USA at the time.
"A Bug's Land"
This region is modeled after the Pixar film A Bug's Life . For this purpose, a backdrop was designed which lets the world appear from the perspective of an insect. So there are oversized grasses and plants with oversized leaves. The main attraction in this region is a 3D film with additional effects such as the use of smoke machines and mechanical effects built into the seat.
Cars land
The Cars Land area was opened in 2012 and adapts the Radiator Springs site and the neighboring landscape on Route 66 from the Pixar film Cars . Cars Land includes three rides as well as several shops and restaurants. The main attraction are the Radiator Springs Racers , which have a driving system comparable to EPCOT's Test Track . In electrically powered cars, visitors are guided through scenes from the film Cars . Finally, a race is simulated outdoors. Other attractions include Mater's Junkyard Jamboree , a Zamperla Demolition Derby and Luigi's Flying Tires , an attraction in which oversized tires suspended by compressed air are maneuvered by shifting one's weight.
