action

The clerk Peggy is in her early 40s; her dog Pencil is her closest friend. One day, Peggy lets her dog run free overnight. Pencil eats something poisonous and then dies.

Peggy's friend Layla says Pencil prevented Peggy from developing a love affair with a man. Peggy's brother and his wife Bret cannot understand the loss. Peggy's neighbor Al makes an appointment with her. He tells her about his experiences as a recreational hunter, which scares her off.

Peggy gets a new dog, Valentine , from Newt, a member of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals . She gets to know Newt better and reveals to him that she is in love with him. Newt says he can't develop a relationship, which annoys Peggy. Peggy accuses Al, when he stops by a little later, that Pencil had been poisoned by something he found in Al's garage.

Peggy begins to be more interested in animals and the subject of animal experiments. She supports numerous animal welfare organizations with money that she steals from her employer. When her boss finds out, he fires her.

Peggy discovers a toxic substance in her neighbor's garage and attacks him with one of his own hunting knives. The police are called. Peggy explains that she wanted Al to feel like he was being hunted himself. Her boss promises to hire her back if she pays back the stolen money. She gets her old job back and is warmly welcomed to her company. Peggy announces to her friends that she will dedicate her life to fighting for animal rights.

Reviews

John Anderson wrote in Variety magazine on Jan. 21, 2007 that the subject of people plagued by emotional needs made the film more of a tragedy than a comedy. The " bittersweet " portrayal of Molly Shannon still makes it an " ironic " comedy. The plot is told more episodically than linearly. The camera work is " wonderful " and " subtle ".

Duane Byrge described the film in The Hollywood Reporter magazine on January 21, 2007 as a " touching comedy " that shows " appealing sentimentality " without " sentimentality ". The portrayal of Molly Shannon offers illuminating humor as well as dark insights. Byrge also praised Regina King, Laura Dern and John C. Reilly.
