Joyce Chopra

Joyce Chopra (born October 27, 1936 in Waltham , Massachusetts ) is an American film director , screenwriter , film producer and feminist documentary filmmaker .

Life

After graduating from Brandeis University , Joyce Chopra studied acting for two years in New York City and then co-owned Club 47, now Club Passim , in Cambridge, Massachusetts . After she published a documentary with Happy Mother's Day in 1963, two further documentaries, Joyce at 34 and Joyce Chopra, appeared in 1972 and 1975, which earned her a reputation as a feminist documentary filmmaker.

From the mid-1980s, after she had met her future husband Tom Cole, she became interested in the feature film. Her first film, the romance Threatening Whisper , was released in 1985, which also received four nominations at the Independent Spirit Awards in 1986 . She then made other television and independent films, including Murder in New Hampshire , Prisoners of Hate and Surfer Girls .

Joyce Chopra was married to screenwriter Tom Cole , who died of cancer in 2009.
