A documentary filmmaker is a person who is largely involved in the production of a documentary film or a documentary series and is therefore considered to be the (co) creator of this film or series. As a rule, the person who came up with the idea for the film or series and aimed to implement it is called a documentary filmmaker . Documentary filmmakers usually act as moderators and / or voice-overs in their work .

It is characteristic that they bring professional experience from other areas, for example as a journalist, scientist or artist, and develop a style appropriate to their subject area, from sober reportage to essay indulging in pictures and words . Again in common is the necessary commercial ability to find money or clients, which are nowadays sponsors or the television companies. The most effective way of doing this professionally is to found your own film production company , because the television companies prefer to outsource production to in-house production.
