Jeffrey Lynn Goldblum (born October 22, 1952 in West Homestead near Pittsburgh , Allegheny County , Pennsylvania ) is an American actor and musician .

life and career

The third son of a doctor and a radio host is of Jewish descent and went to New York to become an actor at the age of 17 . From the early 1970s he was trained at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater by Sanford Meisner . He made his Broadway debut in 1971 in the musical Two Gentlemen of Verona .

First he married Patricia Gaul (1980 to 1986), later the American actress Geena Davis (November 1987 to October 1990). Both marriages remained childless. Goldblum starred with Davis in several films, including the comedy Zebo, the Third from the Center of the Stars and the science fiction horror film The Fly . In November 2014 he married Emilie Livingston, 30 years his junior; with her he has two sons (* July 4th 2015 and * April 7th 2017).

Goldblum made his first film appearance in 1975 in A Man Looks Red with Charles Bronson . This was followed by minor roles in Woody Allen's The Urban Neurotic and in the remake of The Body Eaters Coming , The Stuff Heroes Are Made of, and the Robert Altman films California Split and Nashville . In 1979/80 he played the lead role alongside Ben Vereen in the short-lived crime series Die Schnüffler . In 1985 he showed his skills as a comedian in the comedy Upside Down in the Night by John Landis . At the side of Michelle Pfeiffer, he played the common man who suffered from insomnia and who got into hair-raising situations by chance, using the minimalist stylistic devices typical of him.

“With his 1.94 meters and his dangling arms, he manages the paradoxical feat of exuding a peculiarly awkward elegance. Goldblum is an actor who always keeps a certain distance to his character and seems to be amazed to watch himself while working. "

- Alexander Menden

In 1986 he made his breakthrough with his leading role in Die Fliege . In the 1990s Goldblum took part in the box office hits Jurassic Park , Independence Day , Forgotten World: Jurassic Park and Robert Altman's comedy The Player . In 1996, he received an Oscar nomination in the Best Short Film category for his directorial debut Little Surprises . In 2006 he shot eight episodes of the television series Raines for NBC , in which Goldblum played the title character of an eccentric police officer. Originally planned for 13 episodes, production was stopped halfway by NBC. However, the show achieved acceptable ratings when it was broadcast in 2007.

In 2008 Jeff Goldblum “shone” with Kevin Spacey on the stage of London's Old Vic Theater in David Mamet's Hollywood satire Speed-the-Plow as studio boss. With this play he appeared together with Kevin Spacey at the Ruhr Festival in mid-May 2008 in Recklinghausen . With this piece and with this cast in front of a sold-out house, the 2008 Festival became the greatest success in its history. Goldblum played 2009-2010 (Season 8/9) a leading role in the crime series Criminal Intent as a replacement for Chris Noth , who got out in the seventh season.

Goldblum also works as an acting teacher. Together with Robert Carnegie he founded the Playhouse West School in 1982, where he still teaches today. In German-speaking countries, it was dubbed by Arne Elsholtz until 2015 , who also spoke Tom Hanks , Kevin Kline , Bill Murray , Eric Idle and James Belushi . Since then, Martin Umbach in particular has been responsible for the synchronization.

Goldblum also appears as a jazz pianist, for example with his The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra at the Playboy Jazz Festival 1999. A first album by the band, which was released in November 2018 under the title The Capitol Studios Sessions on Capitol Records and landed at number one on the US jazz charts , followed a year later by I Shouldn't be Telling You This .
