action

The scientist Seth Brundle is working on a device for teleportation to move objects or even living objects from one place to another. After a successful test with a baboon , he subjects himself to a teleportation attempt, in which, however, due to incomplete programming of the computer, his DNA merges with that of a housefly that accidentally got into the teleportation chamber. At first he suddenly has superhuman strength and tests them, among other things, in a bar in arm wrestling, which means a painful defeat for the opponent, including a broken arm. However, from then on Brundle gradually mutated into a humanoid fly monster ( Brundle fly ) .

In the course of this process he increasingly loses his human traits. First of all, bristles grow on his back, then his skin becomes softer, which makes massage painful, and more and more insect-like and in addition he loses a few parts of the body such as ears, genitals and teeth. In addition, he can only ingest food by spitting a digestive fluid on the food and slurping the result. His girlfriend, the journalist Veronica, who presumably becomes pregnant after the teleportation attempt, witnesses his transformation, but cannot prevent Seth's downfall.

In the end, by repeating the experiment, Brundlefliege tries to fuse Veronica and her unborn child into a completely new creature. The attempt can be prevented at the last minute by Veronica's ex-boyfriend Stathis Borans by shooting the connection cable to the box in which Veronica is with a rifle, so that the teleportation of the fly fails, she with part of the chamber, from which she tries to break free by force, melts and thereby becomes completely disfigured and unable to live. Veronica takes the rifle and shoots the creature at its own request after it has brought the weapon to itself to the head.

Background information

The fly is based on a short story by the author George Langelaan that appeared in Playboy magazine in 1957 . The same material was filmed in 1958, see Die Fliege .

In contrast to the first film, the mutation of humans into fly-human hybrids is shown here as a step-by-step process. In the course of this, Brundle not only loses his human appearance, his psyche also changes negatively. In contrast to the original, he initially perceived the changes as positive.

The film was Jeff Goldblum's first big big screen hit . He and Geena Davis fell in love on the set and married a short time later.

Mel Brooks ' production company funded the film after long negotiations with 20th Century Fox, while Fox handled the release. After more than two years of preparation time and some delays in filming due to personal circumstances of the original director, Robert Bierman , David Cronenberg was hired as a director , whose project at the time Total Recall was temporarily suspended. Together with Charles Edward Pogue, he rewrote the script and finally made the film.

The shooting took place with Cronenberg's own film crew in Toronto , Ontario .

Mask and special effects were by Chris Walas Inc. and Les Productions de l'Intrigue Inc. implemented.

With a budget of 15 million US dollars and a box office earnings of 38 million dollars alone in the American cinema, the film was for the producers to a great financial success and he made David Cronenberg become one of the best known and most successful directors of this genre .

continuation

As with the original of the film, there is also a sequel to this remake . In 1989, Chris Walas directed the film Die Fliege 2 , which, however, was neither commercially nor artistically linked to the first part.

Opera

In February 2007, Plácido Domingo announced that the Los Angeles Opera - of which he is General Director - and the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris would produce an operatic version of the film. As in the film, the music comes from Howard Shore, the libretto was written by David Henry Hwang , author of the play M. Butterfly, which was filmed by Cronenberg . The world premiere took place on July 2, 2008 with Domingo as conductor and Cronenberg as director in Paris, the US premiere on September 7, 2008 in Los Angeles. The German premiere took place on January 18, 2014 at the Trier Theater with Joongbae Jee as conductor and Sebastian Welker as director.

Awards (selection)

The film won an Oscar in 1987 for Best Make-up . In the same year the film won three prizes at the Saturn Awards . Jeff Goldblum was honored as best actor, Chris Walas was honored for best make-up and the film was awarded as best horror film.

"I wish that today's horror films would use the fly as a template."

- James Berardinelli on ReelViews

“But what David Cronenberg made of the 'fly' seems to me to be a new level of pathological imagination. A stage has been reached here that compels me to cry out for a ban on this and similar anti-human works. When I read alone that Cronenberg had a total of 15 million dollars available for this madness, I feel sick. "

“David Cronenberg […] created a fascinating remake of the Vincent Price classic from 1958. Oscar for the make-up! Conclusion: ingenious transformation full of tragedy and disgust. "

“Cronenberg's film [...] moves in the naturalistic portrayal of the startling, disgusting process of transformation on a fine line between disgust and fascination; The consistently increased tension dramaturgy, the use of perfect cinematic means and amazing make-up skills as well as the symbolic, impressively composed film music make it a 'delicacy' from a cinematic point of view.
