John Getz (born October 15, 1946 in Davenport , Iowa ) is an American actor .

life and career

John Getz grew up on the border between Iowa and Illinois on the Mississippi River as one of four siblings. During his studies at the University of Iowa he worked on some amateur theater productions, then moved to San Francisco to study acting at the American Conservatory Theater there. He then worked as a stage actor in California for a few years. Getz moved to New York, where he played in Broadway productions, in a children's theater and in Shakespeare productions at the Lincoln Center . During this time, his first roles on US television fell.

Since 1974 Getz has been in front of the camera for over 130 film and television productions. He made his debut in the television-tier horror film Killer Bees alongside Gloria Swanson , Edward Albert and Kate Jackson . He then played the role of architect Neil Johnson in the successful soap opera Another World for a year and a half . He later played leading roles in several series, all of which were canceled relatively quickly - including the crime series MacGrouder and Loud from 1985, in which he and Kathryn Harrold acted as a married couple of police officers. The first time in the cinema was John Getz in 1975 on the side of Lynn Redgrave in The Happy Hooker , a comedy about a call girl, in a small role.

John Getz first became known to a wide audience through his leading role in the thriller Blood Simple - A Murderous Night (1984), the first work by Ethan and Joel Coen . He embodied the lover of Frances McDormand's character, who gets caught in a deadly web of intrigue through clumsiness and bad luck. He then played the science journalist Stathis Borans in David Cronenberg's horror film Die Fliege (1986) and the sequel Die Fliege 2 (1989). In 1987, Getz moved from New York to Los Angeles, after which he turned mainly to work in film and television. For David Fincher he was in smaller supporting roles in his films Zodiac - Die Spur des Killers (2007) and The Social Network (2010) in front of the camera. John Getz was married to the author Grace McKeaney from 1987 until the divorce in 1996; they have a daughter, the camerawoman Hannah Getz.
