The successful graphic artist Nina Talbert has just lost her mother. Her best friend's son helps her break up the household. Despite the enormous age difference, a romance develops between Nina and college student Paul. Paul's mother Abby reacts horrified, even playing with the idea of calling in the police, so that Paul packs his things and moves to Nina.
Only when Paul's little sister Ella fled her own birthday party due to a family quarrel and was seriously injured in a car accident did Nina back down. She prophesies to Paul that their relationship will not work and suggests a breakup. Everyone is now going his own way again.
