When he later reports the incident to his supervisor, he is asked to forget about the incident. On the next mission, Ron is badly wounded and comes back to the USA.

There the doctors tell him that he will remain paraplegic forever below the belly button . After a long and unsuccessful phase of rehabilitation , in which he broke his leg, he returns home. Ron remains a patriot , although he suffers from the experiences of war and his paralysis, which make it impossible for him to continue his previous life. Therefore, he begins to drink and has several arguments with his parents. After his father suggested that he seek rest in Mexico, he complied with this request. He befriends local Vietnamese veterans and spends most of his time drinking alcohol and prostitutes . The also paralyzed veterans frustrate him even more, which is why he is returning to the USA. His worldview is now wavering. He visits the family of the comrade he accidentally killed and confesses what happened in Vietnam. He gradually developed into an opponent of war and took an active part in the anti-war movement.
