Ron Kovic
Ron Kovic (* 4. July 1946 in Ladysmith , Wisconsin ) is an American peace activist , former US - soldier and author .
biography
Ron Kovic fought in the Marines in the Vietnam War . He returned home paralyzed from the chest down from a second voluntary assignment. After an excruciating period of rehabilitation , he began campaigning for the anti-war movement and became a human rights activist because he felt betrayed by the country he had fought for. Even today, Ron Kovic is actively involved in the anti-war movement in the USA.
For his services in Vietnam, Kovic was awarded the Bronze Star , the Purple Heart and the Navy Commendation Medal .
Oliver Stone , who himself completed two service periods in Vietnam , filmed Kovic's life story under the title Born on July 4th with Tom Cruise in the lead role.
