Tom Berenger
Tom Berenger (born May 31, 1949 in Chicago , Illinois ; actually Thomas Michael Moore ) is an American actor. He is mainly known for his roles in action films .
Life
Early years
Berenger was born into an Irish Catholic family from Chicago . His father worked as a salesman for printing machines, his mother devoted herself to the family, which also included an older sister. He attended Rich East High School - years later, his then best friend named Behringer was the godfather of his stage name.
He graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in Journalism, but later made his decision after starring in the play Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? had played for an acting career.
Before starting his acting career, Berenger was a flight attendant at the now defunct airline Eastern Air Lines.
Acting career
At first only seen in local theater groups, he moved to New York in the 1970s , where he got roles in a few soap operas and attended drama school. However, he was often forced to take odd jobs in order to survive. So he worked z. B. for an airline as a steward, appeared in commercials for toothpaste and worked as a model for the Wilhelma agency.
He had his first leading role in Rush it (1976), a film that was soon forgotten, but was occupied by some actors that were later noted. In the same year he married his childhood sweetheart Barbara Wilson.
In 1977 he played a widely recognized supporting role as the murderer of Diane Keaton in In Search of Mr. Goodbar . Several other roles followed, but his breakthrough wasn't until the 1980s. One of the first commercially successful films was The Great Frustration , in which he starred alongside Glenn Close , Jeff Goldblum , William Hurt and Kevin Kline .
Above all, the role of Sgt. Barnes in the anti-war film Platoon (1986) brought him notoriety and recognition: He received an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe for his achievements. In the following years he played under renowned directors ( Ridley Scott , Constantin Costa-Gavras , Jim Sheridan , Héctor Babenco , Wolfgang Petersen , Dennis Hopper , Robert Altman , Sönke Wortmann ) and alongside well-known actors ( Sidney Poitier , Debra Winger , Aidan Quinn , Kathy Bates , Bob Hoskins , Charlie Sheen , Sharon Stone , Kenneth Branagh , Daryl Hannah ).
His own production company called First Corps Endeavours, which produced three of his films between 1995 and 1997, was unsuccessful.
Private life
Berenger has two children from his first wife, Barbara Wilson (née Moore), with whom he was married from 1976 to 1984: Allison Moore (born 1977) and Patrick Moore (born 1978).
