The field was largely panned by the criticism. At Rotten Tomatoes , the film received 43% (with 14 reviews) with an average rating of 5.2 out of 10. The user ratings are 81% positive (3.8 / 5). The film achieved a similar value in the IMDb (7.4 / 10).

The film is said to be too obvious that it is an adaptation of a stage play than that the story told works much better, if only because one cannot see the field on stage. It is a very small story that it would be better not to make a film, or an ambitious and sometimes convincing wreck. The individual achievements of the film are convincing. Overall, the film is a massive peasant drama , a stirring, almost Greek tragedy , but in the overall impression it is rather incoherent or even inadequate because of the technical defects of the conventional style .

The performance of Richard Harris is praised. He gives a great performance, even if his face (like that of the other actors) doesn't really match the very authentic faces of the village population. However, this achievement is in the service of a hopeless cause. The resulting Oscar nomination prevents the film from forgetting what it actually deserved. It is also noted that the figure is too big and too symbolic, like everything else about the film.

Gross profit

The film grossed $ 1,414,017 at the US box office. With an estimated production cost of around $ 5,000,000, it is therefore classified as a flop .

Even so, The Field was the most commercially successful film in Ireland in 1990.
