Aasleagh ( Irish Eas Liath ) is the name of an Irish waterfall in northern Connemara . It is fed by the river Erriff (ir. An Oirimh ) and is located just before the mouth of the river in the Killary Fjord northeast of the village of Leenaun on the border of the counties Galway and Mayo . The name goes back to the originally Irish name Eas Liath . Eas is the waterfall and liath denotes the color gray, which translates as " gray waterfall ". The Aasleagh waterfall was just like the place Leenaun, the film set for the 1990 film The Field with Richard Harris .
Aasleagh is a popular photo opportunity for visitors among the natural wonders of Connemara. Near the waterfall is Aasleagh Lodge, an 18th century country house that is now operated as a fishing lodge by the regional fisheries administration. The waters of the Erriff are famous for their salmon.
mythology
According to the Ulster cycle of Irish mythology , the two favorite horses of the hero Cú Chulainn , Liath Macha and Dub Sainglenn , are said to have emerged from the Linn Liaith ("gray pool") and then disappeared again after his death. A - controversial - localization connects this place with the Eas Liath .
