Connemara
Connemara ( Irish : Conamara ) is a region in western Ireland in County Galway in the west of Connacht Province . It corresponds to the part of the county that lies west of Lough Corrib and the Barony of Ross (also known as Joyce's Country ), which extends into southern County Mayo .
history
The name Conamara originally comes from the Conmhaicne ( descendants of Conmhac ), an early tribal group that had sidelines in different parts of Connacht. A sideline of the tribe were the Conmhaicne Mara ( C. of the sea ). The Conmhaicne are named after Conmhac ("son of the dog"), who, according to mythology, was also the son of a Queen of Connacht.
geography
The landscape of Connemara is divided into two parts - the part south of the national road N59 from Galway to Clifden consists mainly of heather and moorland , the northern part consists of several 700 m high mountains, the Twelve Bens , in which the Connemara National Park is located near Clifden .
The unofficial capital of Connemara is Clifden . The coastal region consists of a few islands and peninsulas, small fishing ports and many beaches. The Iorras Ainbhtheach peninsula in the south is the largest, with the villages of Carna and Kilkieran to be found on it. The Errismore peninsula is west of Ballyconeely . The largest island is Inishbofin , other islands are Omey , Inishark , High and Friars Island. Dolmens and menhirs can be found in the area around Clifden . The pollen analysis in Lough Sheeauns revealed early signs of settlement .
The famous green-tinged Connemara marble that the locals used to trade in is now a great treasure.
Culture
In the 1950s, The Quiet Man (German Der Sieger ), an Oscar-winning Hollywood film, was shot in Connemara.
A song by the folk rock band Fiddler's Green also deals with Connemara.
Nowadays the name Connemara is best associated with the famous Connemara ponies and the Connemara whiskey from the Cooley Distillery.
There is also a chanson by Michel Sardou on the war history of the area. With his book Connemara , the Austrian writer and artist Richard Wall realized a poetic-literary approach to the landscape and culture of the Gaeltacht region . In the circle of the winds .
Parks, buildings, island
From Connemarinolas (Rossaveel) you can visit the Aran Islands by ferry . Away from bus tourism (and overcrowded narrow streets) south of the N59 runs a lonely route through the most beautiful and peaceful parts of Connemara from and to the R341 or south of and to the R340 .
