Oughterard ( Irish : Uachtar Ard ) is a town in County Galway in the west of the Republic of Ireland .

The place is located 26 km northwest of Galway in Connemara on the national road N59 . Nearby is the west bank of Lough Corrib , the largest lake in the Republic of Ireland; therefore Oughterard is a popular place for anglers . In the 2006 census , Oughterard had 1305 inhabitants (after 1209 in the 2002 census); for the urban area the number in 2006 was 2557 (after 2380 in the 2002 census).

In addition to in and around Cong , a few scenes for the film " The Quiet Man " by John Ford were shot near Oughterard in 1952 .

Saint Patrick's Rock near Oughterard is a huge boulder .
