The Lough Corrib ( Irish : Loch Coirib ) is 200 square kilometers the largest lake in the Republic of Ireland (and after Lough Neagh is the second largest on the island of Ireland ). It is located in County Galway and is connected to the sea by the Corrib River , which flows into the Atlantic Ocean in Galway . Lough Corrib was designated a Ramsar Conservation Area on June 16, 1996 .
The Annaghdown Churches are located on the eastern shore of the lake, in which there are numerous small islands. There are the ruins of a cathedral from the 15th century , with the remains of an older church, and a monastery church from 1195, which go back to a nunnery founded by St. Brendan for his sister Briga. He is said to have died here in 577. The Inchagoill Churches, also remnants of an early monastery, are located on an island in the lake, and near the north bank are the former Cong Abbey and Aughnanure Castle .
The old Irish name of the lake Loch Oirbsein or Loch Orib goes back to the legendary figure Orbsen Mac Alloid (commonly known as Manannán Mac Lir - "son of the sea"), after whom the Isle of Man is also named. Sir William Wilde published a book about the lake in 1867.
The lake is very popular with anglers because, despite its proximity to Galway City, its size means it offers many quiet and secluded fishing opportunities. Trout , pike , perch and salmon can be fished here . For some years now, pike populations have been reduced by catching spawning animals with gill nets . The pike is considered to be an invasive species that is thought to harm the trout population in the lake. The pike stocks have already been reduced by the fishing measures.
