Gill net

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gill net as a gill net

In a gill net , the fish are not trapped like in a kind of funnel or net , but when they try to swim through the mesh of a vertically set up net, their heads get stuck in it. They are prevented from swimming back by the fact that their gills get caught in the mesh. Gill nets are simple, single-walled nets with only one mesh size (tailored to the target fish). A gill net does not necessarily have to be moved through the water, but is also suitable as a gill net .

Gaddernets are similar : here, a fine-meshed, loosely set inner thread lies on a coarse-meshed outer net. Here the fish tries to swim through the coarse gadders, pulling the inner net through them and getting caught in a kind of bag.
