action

Victor Cooper is one of the best undercover agents in the US Customs Service . Temporarily inactive due to some disciplinary misconduct, he is reactivated by his superior for a particularly difficult case. Assigned to investigate drug smuggling in Miami , however, the arrest of the courier he was monitoring failed. Cooper, who cannot let this defeat sit on him, pays a visit to the local parachute school following an inspiration. When he came across a photo of the suspected courier there, his suspicion became a certainty. Cooper infiltrates the group and completes training to become a skydiver . The group noticed Cooper's talent very quickly, who at the same time, unnoticed, took advantage of private training from a US Army specialist (Delmira). This talent does not remain hidden from the head of the group (Red Line). When Cooper, after having passed his license, seems ready to "cut himself off" from the constraints of a materialistic society like the other members of the group before him, Red Line takes him into his formation. The aim of the formation jump run by the group is the fastest possible combination of all eight jumpers (Speed Star) during the free fall phase. The jumpers are divided into 8 positions, of which the first represents the least technically and the eighth the most technically demanding.

The cohesion of the group, the carefree life on and above the jump area, the lived feeling of boundless freedom and, last but not least, the love for Star, his AFF teacher, cause an inner conflict in Cooper that does not remain hidden from his superior (Lieutenant Margate) .

Cooper rises steadily in the internal hierarchy and gradually acquires more demanding positions (line up) within the group formation. The battle for Red Lines position No. 7 culminates in a flying race between Cooper and Redline's closest confidante Turbo. This races unchecked into the formation of the group and dies of a broken neck. From now on Cooper is the new number 7 and Red Lines deputy. Having to rely on a new second man to deliver the drugs, he finally opens up to Cooper.

After a few successful deliveries, Red Line is eventually injured and almost arrested during the final handover. Cooper, whose identity threatens to be discovered, is able to flee from the scene with Red Line, but in return promises his superior to arrest and extradite Red Line himself.

In the following, however, Cooper decides to take part in the formation jumpers' competition and postpone Red Line's arrest. The winners of the televised event will receive high-value sponsorship deals, which would mean financial independence for the group.

The duel in the competition between the Miami group for Cooper and the US Army group for its instructor Delmira finally comes to a head. World records are broken and the only possibility for Cooper's group to undercut a fabulous time of the opponents leads to the joint exit of Red Line and himself. With 9.90 seconds the group is not only able for the first time to undercut the time of 10 seconds that it believed impossible, it also beats its opponents and has thus fulfilled its dream.

Cooper reveals himself hanging from the parachute to Red Line. He prefers suicide to prison and removes his umbrella.

Sitting on the floor next to Red Line's corpse, Cooper has to choose one last time between a life as a cop and a life as a skydiver. Since he has already "cut himself off", he joins his team.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was " prepared by a specialist in parachuting " and that it was " relatively tension-free ". The drawing of the figures remains “ on the clichéd surface ”. The film " only arouses short-term interest through its breathtaking jump scenes ".

Ryan Cracknell wrote in the Apollo Movie Guide that the film consists of 90% action, 7% plot and 3% opening and closing credits. His big problem is that he tells two stories where one would be enough. The producers obviously intended to make a film about skydiving; the storyline about the undercover investigation is completely unnecessary. Dennis Rodman appears " surprisingly plausible " in the role of a villain .

The film magazine Cinema wrote: "' Dangerous surf ' for the poor. The clichéd film is the directorial debut of the skydiving stunt expert Guy Manos , who also wrote the template for ' Drop Zone ' (1994). Conclusion: spectacular stunts, sparse script. "

backgrounds

The film was in Fort Bragg ( North Carolina ) and Miami rotated. Its production amounted to an estimated 9 million US dollars . The debut director coordinated the parachute stunts for the film Eraser ; He worked as a stuntman in the films Cliffhanger - Only the Strong Survive , Last Action Hero , Drop Zone and Virus .
