Life

After completing his training as an elementary school teacher at the Kettwig University of Education and as a qualified pedagogue as well as working as an elementary school teacher , Horst Bartnitzky worked in teacher training as well as elementary school rector , school councilor and department head at the Düsseldorf district government, responsible for elementary schools and migrants. He has been retired since 2005.

Horst Bartnitzky had been on the board of the primary school association since 1980 and was its chairman from 2000 to 2010. Bartnitzky has helped shape the pedagogical and didactic discussion about primary schools in Germany over the past four decades. As chairman of various ministry commissions, he was also involved in the development of the 'language' and 'German' curricula for primary and secondary schools between 1985 and 2003 in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Since 1968 Bartnitzky published numerous articles on educational policy and practical school issues. He contributed to the clarification of the term “performance” and in particular to the establishment of an educational understanding of performance. From 1983 to 2003 he published the textbook series “Primary School Teachers' Library”. A professional focus is German didactics. He is interested in action-oriented, student-activating lessons that integrate all areas of German lessons. In addition, Bartnitzky presented a concept in which German, foreign and native language lessons are combined in one language learning area. In terms of teaching practice, he implemented the concept of integrated German lessons as the editor and author of textbooks in the “Kunterbunt” textbook association until 2012.

From 1988 to 2013 he developed the membership magazine "Grundschule aktuell" into an important specialist body, first as editor, later as editor. With a project group of the Primary School Association, he has been developing a new concept for writing education in primary schools since 2010: the basic font as the starting and development font for an easily legible individual handwriting.
