Ron Silver
Ronald Arthur "Ron" Silver (born July 2, 1946 in New York City , New York , † March 15, 2009 ibid) was an American actor .
Life and accomplishments
Ron Silver was born in New York City to assistant teacher May (née Zimelman) and sales manager Irving Roy Silver. He grew up in the Lower East Side and attended the East Side Hebrew Institute Jewish day school . Silver then attended the elite Stuyvesant High School and studied at the State University of New York in Buffalo and at New York's St. John's University . In the early 1970s he worked for the US government.
He made his actor debut in 1974 on the television series The Mac Davis Show . In 1982 he starred alongside Barbara Hershey in the ghost thriller The Entity based on a true story . He starred in the 1983 film drama Silkwood alongside Meryl Streep and Kurt Russell . For his role in the thriller The Deadly Games of the Yuppies (1987), he was nominated for an Emmy Award in 1988 . In 1990 he played one of the leading roles alongside Jamie Lee Curtis in the thriller Blue Steel . In 1992 he appeared in the thriller Hydrotoxin - The bomb is ticking in you alongside Pierce Brosnan , in the science fiction thriller Timecop in 1994 alongside Jean-Claude Van Damme .
In the television movie Kissinger and Nixon he played the role of Henry Kissinger in 1995 , for which he was nominated for a Gemini Award in 1997. In 1996 and 1997 he appeared in several episodes of the Chicago Hope television series . From 2001 to 2006 he played the role of Bruno Gianelli in the series The West Wing - In the Center of Power , for which he received an Emmy Award nomination in 2002 . He received another Emmy nomination in 2005 for his role in the television movie Jack (2004).
In 1988, he won for his role in the play The advantage of the moment (Speed the Plow) by David Mamet a Tony Award .
Silver was married to Lynne Miller from 1975 to 1997 and had two children. He died on March 15, 2009 in New York of esophageal cancer diagnosed two years earlier.
Political activities
In 2000, Silver was a co-founder of the One Jerusalem organization , which spoke out against the Oslo Accords and the division of Jerusalem . He was originally considered a supporter of the Democrats and campaigned for Bill Clinton in the presidential election, but supported the Republican Rudolph Giuliani in the 1994 mayoral election in New York. He has supported George W. Bush since 2001, citing the reason he believed the Democrats were lax towards the dangers of terrorism .
In 2002 and 2003, Silver appeared publicly as a supporter of the Iraq war . In a televised discussion on CNN International , in which Bianca Jagger also participated, Silver spoke out against continuing weapons inspections on the grounds that Saddam Hussein had 15 years to control his weapons of mass destruction .
In 2004, Silver was a speaker at the Republican Convention. On October 7, 2005, Silver was appointed by George W. Bush to serve on the board of directors of the United States Institute of Peace , which was established in 1984 by the then US President Ronald Reagan . In the 2008 presidential election, he elected Democratic President Barack Obama .
