The affair of Fortune ( Reversal of Fortune ) is an American film drama by Barbet Schroeder from the year 1990 . The plot is based on the biographical novel of the same name by Alan M. Dershowitz , the defense attorney for Claus von Bülow, who was accused of the murder of his wife Sunny .
action
The story is partly told in flashbacks from the perspective of Sunny von Bülow, who is comatose in the hospital .
The Danish aristocrat Claus von Bülow marries his affair, the wealthy Sunny. However, the marriage soon finds itself in crisis. In addition to regular meetings with prostitutes, Claus has an affair with a lady of high social standing. Meanwhile, Sunny regularly consumes drugs and excessive alcohol.
One day, Sunny is found in a comatose state, like a few months before, but this time she does not wake up. The cause is an overdose of insulin . Her husband is charged with attempted murder and charged with injecting her insulin. In an initial trial, he is sentenced to 30 years' imprisonment.
The film shows the preparations of a law professor and his team for a second trial. Flashbacks tell you about situations and the relationship between Claus and Sunny. In a revision process, Claus von Bülow is acquitted. Until the end, however, it remains unclear how the insulin dose came about.
Reviews
Roger Ebert described in the Chicago Sun-Times of October 17, 1990 that the charm of the film is that, in the end, no attempt is made to explain whether it was an attempted murder and who might have carried it out. It is “awesome” that Sunny von Bülow , who is in a comatose state, leads the narration. The film is not a docudrama, but rather a film about the personalities of the people involved.
Awards
Jeremy Irons won the Golden Globe Award and the Oscar for Best Actor in 1991 , while Barbet Schroeder and Nicholas Kazan each received a nomination for both awards. The film was also nominated for Best Motion Picture Drama for the Golden Globe Award, for the Artios of the Casting Society of America, and for the Political Film Society Award for Exposé .
background
The film was shot in New York and Newport ( Rhode Island ), the world premiere took place on September 12, 1990 at the Toronto Film Festival . The box office in the United States amounted to 15.4 million US dollars .
