Luciano Tovoli (born October 30, 1936 in Massa Marittima , Grosseto , Tuscany ) is an Italian cameraman .

Life

After studying linguistics and literature at the University of Pisa , Tovoli studied from 1956 to 1958 as a cameraman at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia . He was accepted as one of four Italians and four foreigners. One of the foreigners was the future Spanish cameraman Néstor Almendros , with whom Tovoli became friends during this time. He couldn't get used to the future prospects of his studies, as he could only have become a cameraman for television after several years of working as a camera assistant and camera operator. Tovoli renounced and went his own way. He got to know the then very well-known Italian filmmaker Vittorio De Seta , who promised him work if he had done his military service. But before that he was camera assistant under Giuseppe Rotunno in Vittorio De Sica's comedy Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow . He was then officially responsible for the camera work in De Seta's film The Bandits of Orgosolo , although this was De Seta's part and Tovoli himself was cameraman. Ironically, the film won a film award for Best Cinematography, which was given to De Seta, not Tovoli.

Since Tovoli was still unknown, he had problems getting work for the next few years, and only those who knew about the story hired him. In addition to individual small films, he was mainly active in documentaries. By chance he met the Italian director Franco Brusati , who hired him for the comedy Bread and Chocolate , which was shot in Belgium. After shooting the documentary Chung Kuo - Cina in China for the Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni , he again directed the camera for De Seta in Diario di un maestro . After this project threatened to fail, De Seta asked almost pleadingly for Tovoli's cooperation. After further projects, Tovoli finally worked as a cameraman for advertising in Paris and London.

With Paris, Tovoli was then given a second mainstay, because in addition to Italian he then worked as a cameraman for French productions such as Tenebrae and A Cage Full of Fools - Now Will Be Married . From there he went to Hollywood with the French director Barbet Schroeder , where he took over the camera in his films The Affair of Sunny von B. , Kiss of Death and Desperate Measures .
