Giuseppe Rotunno
Giuseppe Rotunno (born March 19, 1923 in Rome , † February 7, 2021 there ) was an Italian cameraman .
Life
From the 1940s onwards, Rotunno worked as a simple cameraman on film productions, including films as diverse as Vittorio De Sica's neo-realism classic Umberto D. (1952) and the adventure film Attila, the Scourge of God . His first film as head cameraman was Dino Risi's feature film Love, Bread and a Thousand Kisses with Sophia Loren in the lead role in 1955 . By 1997 Rotunno was to work as head cameraman on more than 75 feature films as well as some documentaries and television productions.
Rotunno became known through his work with artistically leading Italian directors, for example with several on the episode film Boccaccio 70 . One of his first significant camera works was in Luchino Visconti's literary film White Nights in 1957 , with which he later shot the classic films Rocco and his Brothers and The Leopard . Rotunno later worked very successfully with Federico Fellini on eight films from the late 1960s to the 1980s , including Fellini's Satyricon , Fellini's Roma and Amarcord . With Liliana Cavani he shot the scandal film Der Nachtportier in 1974 . As early as the mid-1960s, Rotunno was also working on English-language productions, for example Die Bibel (1966), Red Sonja (1985), Rent-a-Cop (1987), Die Abenteuer des Baron Münchhausen (1988) and Sabrina (1995). His last film was the documentary Marcello Mastroianni: mi ricordo, sì, io mi ricordo from 1997.
The abbreviations AIC and ASC mentioned in the film credits indicate Rotunno's membership in both the Italian and the US professional organization for cameramen. He died in Rome in February 2021, six weeks before his 98th birthday.
Prizes and awards
For his camera work on Bob Fosse's musical film All That Jazz (1979), Rotuno was nominated for an Oscar in 1980 and won the BAFTA in 1981 . In 1966, 1984, 1986, 1990 and 2006 he was awarded the David di Donatello . He was honored seven times with the Nastro d'argento for the best camera .
