Fateful friendship (Original title: L'Adoption ) is a French film directed by Marc Grunebaum from 1979 . The film was Grunebaum's debut as a film director and at the same time remained his only feature film.

Seventeen-year-old Etienne, plagued by epileptic fits, is accused by the villagers of having started a fire. He goes into hiding with the artist couple Catherine and Jacques. Jacques is a painter and also teaches children in a home for the mentally handicapped. Catherine is bored in the village and with her husband. Etienne gets used to the couple and experiences affection and friendliness for the first time in his life. You live together like a family and Etienne speaks of the couple as his parents. The situation is thrown out of whack when Etienne falls in love with Catherine. When he is rejected, he has repeated epileptic fits, and in one of these fits he destroys Jacques' pictures.
