A Jew as an example (original title: Un juif pour l'exemple ) is a 2016 film by Jacob Berger . The plot is based on the novel of the same name by the Swiss writer Jacques Chessex .

The film begins in 1942, in the middle of World War II. In Payerne , a small rural town in western Switzerland , a couple of young men decide to make an example for Hitler's 53rd birthday . They want to kill a Jew to prove their loyalty to the Führer. The victim is the Jewish cattle dealer Arthur Bloch .
After Bloch is murdered and sunk in pieces in Lake Neuchâtel and the cloak of silence falls on Payerne, the film jumps into the present. Because when Jacques Chessex published his reappraisal of the authentic case in a novel in 2009, he experienced an unexpected smear campaign that he would not have thought possible and that is also shown in the film. In this way, two parts emerge in the film: a historical approach to the Bloch case and the realization that the dark chapters of history need a lot of time to be processed.
Anachronisms such as a modern building behind the garage of the main culprit Fernand Ischi, who dreams of a career as a Gauleiter , or modern police uniforms are not an oversight by the film director, but a conscious indication that history can repeat itself at any time.

On the occasion of the Swiss Film Prize 2017, Bruno Ganz was awarded Best Actor for his portrayal of the cattle dealer Arthur Bloch .
