Jacob Berger (born June 23, 1963 in Lydney , Gloucestershire , England ) is a filmmaker with Swiss and British citizenship .

Jacob Berger is the son of the English writer John Berger and the translator Anya Berger . After studying at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University , he shot his first feature film in Barcelona in 1989 under the title Angels , with Féodor Atkine and Ángela Molina , among others . The film was shown at the Berlinale and the Locarno Film Festival in 1990. His 1991 television film Jour Blanc in the Swiss Alps, with Heinz Bennent , Jean-Yves Berteloot and Fabienne Périneau, received an award at the Antibes Mountain Film Festival .

Between 1990 and 1994, Berger made several documentaries on behalf of Télévision Suisse Romande , including a portrait of the Islamic Salvation Front in Algeria , a report on the situation in the Soviet Union a few days after the August coup in Moscow , and a portrait of Federal Councilor Jean-Pascal Delamuraz and his Failed campaign for Switzerland to join the EEA , a report on the civil war in Afghanistan shortly before the Taliban came to power , as well as a report on the reconquest of Eastern Slavonia and Krajina by the Croatian army in the Croatian war and the tragic consequences for the Serbian civilian population .

He also conducted a few interviews with the writer Georges Haldas in the Israeli-occupied territories , as well as a documentary on stage fright with Charlotte Gainsbourg , Arielle Dombasle , Pierre Arditi , Michel Galabru , Jean-François Stévenin and Jean-Claude Brialy, among others .

The film Aime ton père (“Love Your Father”) with Gérard Depardieu , his son Guillaume Depardieu , Sylvie Testud , Hiam Abbass and Julien Boisselier deals with a difficult father-son relationship . The film was shown at the Locarno Festival 2002 and represented Switzerland at the 2003 Academy Awards . 2006–2007 the film A Day with Bruno Todeschini , Natacha Régnier and Zinedine Soualem was made , which was awarded for best production at the Montreal World Film Festival 2007.

The 2017 Locarno Film Festival opened with his film A Jew as an Example (2016), based on the novel of the same name by Jacques Chessex . The film is about the murder of Swiss-Jewish cattle trader Arthur Bloch by Frontists in Payerne in April 1942. A Jew as an example was followed by the Film Festival of Thessaloniki , at the Film Festival Palm Springs and at the Festival Jerusalem Film shown and for the European Film Awards and the Swiss Film Prize Nominated in 2017, whereupon Bruno Ganz was named best actor for his portrayal of the cattle dealer Arthur Bloch.
