Ein Tag (original title: 1 Journée ) is a Swiss film drama by director Jacob Berger from 2007. The film is set in Geneva and describes the intertwined experiences of a family on a single day from the perspective of the respective protagonists.

action

Early in the morning, the radio journalist Serge goes from his wife Pietra to his lover Mathilde. He has a car accident on the way to work. The scene is only hinted at. He seems to hit someone, but the victim is not shown and Serge's search is unsuccessful. However, his vehicle has clear dents. Without notifying the police, he leaves the scene of the accident. The incident weighs on him. In the morning, Serge visits the scene again, accidentally bumping into his lover Mathilde, whom he takes into his apartment.

Meanwhile, Pietra brings their son Vlad to school and goes to work in a museum. However, this is blocked because of an allegedly rabid dog. Pietra saves the dog from animal catchers. Back at her apartment, she notices that her husband Serge is there with a lover. She leaves the apartment unnoticed and later follows her lover Mathilde.

During the course of the day, Serge tries to find out details about the possible victim, first in a hospital and finally with the police, while simulating a report about the escape from an accident. Inspector Haddid is suspicious, but does not show anything. Besides, Serge ends his affair with Mathilde. But only half-heartedly because he keeps her apartment key.

The little son Vlad feels drawn to his classmate Manon. She is Mathilde's daughter. He tries for her to bring a seahorse preserved in a jar to life - but it fails.

Offended by the affair of her husband Serge, Pietra quickly packs a suitcase, goes to the airport and spends the rest of the day there, but does not fly. Meanwhile, her son Vlad waits in vain for her after school and is finally taken away by Manon's mother Mathilde (Serge's lover).

Towards the end of the day, Serge reveals to Inspector Haddid that he has hit and missed. With a touch of self-pity, he also confesses his infidelity to his wife. Finally Pietra, Serge and Vlad meet in the entrance area of their apartment block. In the final scene, the supposedly rabid dog from the museum scene is shown in front of the house.

Scenic details

The temporal connection of the events is established by recurring scenes from different perspectives as well as by Serge's radio presentations. The other protagonists are shown while listening to the announcements.

criticism

According to the TV station Arte , Ein Tag is “a modern family drama, cool and precisely staged and provided with a precise imagery that links the characters and events into a complex, puzzling and thus also exciting network”.

The internet portal filmsprung.ch praises the “fascinating structure and a technically perfect staging” of the film, but draws a negative conclusion: One day is “high-gloss kitsch, as the figures show little depth and the emotions seem artificial”.

Awards

The production has received numerous international nominations and won the prize for best director at the World Film Festival in Montréal .
