The Jerusalem Film Festival is an international film festival that takes place annually in July in Jerusalem . It is primarily dedicated to the Israeli - Jewish film scene.

history

After the director of the Jerusalem Cinemathek Lia van Leer was a juror at the Cannes Film Festival in 1983 , she decided to organize such a festival in Israel as well. The opening of the new festival took place on May 17, 1984, in the presence of international stars such as Jeanne Moreau , Warren Beatty , John Schlesinger and André Delvaux . Around 100 Israeli and international films were shown in three weeks.

In the course of the 1980s the festival got its current form: The festival lasts ten days and between 150 and 200 films are shown in different series. The JFF presents international films in the Panorama series , and Israeli competition entries are shown in the “Israeli Films” section. There are also documentary series, the Jewish Experience series , which deals with films about Jewish identity and history, the Spirit of Freedom series , which is dedicated to civil and human rights issues, one program dedicated to television and one for newcomers. The festival is accompanied by a supporting program with concerts, readings, exhibitions, workshops and symposia. The central venues are the Jerusalem Cinematheque, the Lev Smadar cinema, the Jerusalem Old Railway Station cultural center and an open-air cinema at an archaeological excavation site. In 1989, the Wolgin Prize has become an important prize for Israeli film. In 2010 the prize was renamed the Haggiag Family Award .

In 2008 van Leer resigned at the age of 84 and Ilan de Vries became the new director of the festival.
