The Örebro Canal ( Swedish Örebro Canal ) is the shortest canal in Sweden at 1.5 kilometers . The canal is located in Örebro in the Swedish province of Närke .

history

The Örebro Canal is not a specially built waterway, but an extension or deepening of Svartån . From 1886 the fairway was deepened to 2.3 m. A lock was built in Skebäck , which is still in use today. In the course of the expansion work, Örebro got a new port. This was much more central than before in the eastern part of Skebäck.

On September 24, 1888, the Örebro Canal and the port were inaugurated. From this point on there was constant shipping between Örebro and Stockholm via the Hjälmaren . With the increase in freight transport by trains and trucks, the Örebro Canal lost more and more of its economic importance in the 20th century. In 1960 the regular ship operation was finally stopped.

Today the canal is used exclusively for tourism. Around 50 locks per week for passenger boats are carried out in summer. The Arboga shipping company also operates a number of excursion boats.
