Jean-Pascal Delamuraz (born April 1, 1936 in Vevey , † October 4, 1998 in Lausanne ; resident in Longirod ) was a Swiss politician ( FDP ).

biography

Delamuraz studied political science at the University of Lausanne and graduated in 1960.

He held his first political office as a councilor in Lausanne . In 1969 he moved to the city ​​council and had a seat there until 1981. Delamuraz was elected to the National Council in 1975 by the voters of the Canton of Vaud and in 1981 to the State Council of the Canton of Vaud . There he was head of the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Industry.

Jean-Pascal Delamuraz was elected to the Federal Council on December 7, 1983 with 130 of 246 votes in the first ballot . He was confirmed in office in 1987 with 194 out of 244 votes, in 1991 with 172 out of 240 votes and in 1995 with 193 out of 242 votes. On January 14, 1998, he announced his resignation for health reasons and handed over his office on March 30, 1998 to his successor Pascal Couchepin . Less than six months later he succumbed to cancer.

Delamuraz was a very popular politician, especially in French-speaking countries. He was a proven supporter of Switzerland joining the EU. During his tenure, he headed the following departments:

• 1984–1986: Federal Military Department
• 1987–1998: Federal Department of Economic Affairs

He was Federal President in 1989 and 1996 and Vice President in 1988 and 1995.
