Guy Parmelin (born November 9, 1959 in Bursins ; entitled to live there ) is a Swiss politician ( SVP ). He was first elected to the National Council in 2003 . At the general elections of the Federal Council in 2015 he was appointed as successor to the retiring Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf ( BDP ) in the Federal Council selected. He has been Head of the Federal Department of Economics, Education and Research (EAER) since January 1, 2019 . In 2021 he held the office ofFederal President .

Life

Guy Parmelin grew up as a farmer's son in Bursins and went through high school in Lausanne with a focus on English and Latin. Later he trained as a farmer and winemaker . Until his election to the Federal Council, he and his brother ran the father's court in Bursins. In the military he held the degree of corporal .

From 1996 to 2015 Parmelin was a member of the board of directors of the agricultural company Fenaco , from 2009 Vice President. From 2012 to 2015 he was a member of the board of directors of the building insurance of the canton of Vaud .

Parmelin is married and lives in Bursins and Bern .

politics

Parmelin made his debut in politics from 1993 to 1999 in the municipal council of Bursins. From 1994 to 2003 he was a member of the Cantonal Parliament of Vaud . In the 2003 elections he was first elected to the National Council. There he was a member of the commission for social security and health, the commission for the environment, spatial planning and energy as well as the commission for the determination of the contributions of the resource, burden and hardship compensation. From 2000 to 2004 Parmelin was president of the SVP of the canton of Vaud.

In November 2015, the SVP parliamentary group nominated him as one of three official candidates for the Federal Council elections. He was elected to the Federal Council on December 9, 2015 by the United Federal Assembly in the third ballot . He took up this post on January 1, 2016 and took over the management of the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS).

With the renewal elections of the Federal Council at the end of 2018, there was a change in the division of departments. Guy Parmelin has been Head of the Federal Department of Economics, Education and Research (EAER) since January 1, 2019 ; he is deputy head of his previous department.

On December 9, 2020, Parmelin was elected Federal President for the year 2021 with 188 valid votes (out of a total of 246) of the United Federal Assembly.

On the occasion of the Geneva summit conference on June 16, 2021, Guy Parmelin welcomed US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin at Villa La Grange in Geneva . During the conference, Parmelin was able to hold separate discussions with Biden and Putin on Switzerland's relations with the United States and with Russia .
