Rudolf Gnägi
Rudolf Gnägi (born August 3, 1917 in Schwadernau , Canton Bern , † April 20, 1985 in Spiegel near Bern , entitled to live in Schwadernau) was a Swiss politician ( BGB / SVP ). As a Federal Councilor , he was Minister of Transport and Defense and held the office of Federal President twice . Gnägi was married to Verena von Allmen.
Political career
From 1952 to 1965 Gnägi was a member of the Bern government (executive branch of the canton ) and from 1953 he was also the Bern National Councilor in the Swiss parliament .
He was elected to the Federal Council on December 8, 1965 ; he took office on January 1, 1966. On December 31, 1979, he resigned.
During his tenure he headed the following departments:
- 1966–1968: Department of Transport and Energy
- 1968–1979: Military Department
He was Federal President in 1971 and 1976.

- 1971: Re-election as Federal Council with 178 votes (absolute majority: 104 votes)
- 1974: Election of Vice President of the Federal Council with 197 votes (absolute majority: 105 votes)
- 1975: Re-election as Federal Council with 189 votes (absolute majority: 110 votes)
- 1975: Election to the Federal President with 180 votes (absolute majority: 104 votes)
Others
From his tenure as head of the military department came the introduction of the jersey shirt 75, the so-called Gnägi , an olive green, light turtleneck sweater for the troops. Shortly before his resignation, the Bachmann / Schilling affair occurred when an overly eager Swiss man was arrested while watching a military maneuver in Austria. The youth writer Elisabeth Müller was one of his friends . He was a member of the Concordia fraternity and Vice President of the Men Concordia (1951-1952).
