history
The village is located in the Bernese Seeland , between the course of the old Aare and the Nidau-Büren Canal , about halfway between Biel / Bienne and Büren an der Aare . From the 15th to the 19th century, the then poor farming community was regularly hit by severe floods. Under the direction of Johann Rudolf Schneider (1804–1880) from Meienried, the Nidau-Büren Canal was built between 1868 and 1878 as part of the first correction of the Jura waters , which prevented further flooding. The poor years were followed by an upswing.
The community of Schwadernau was first mentioned in 1252 as the property of the Count of Nidau. In 1281 the count handed over part of his rights to the Bishop of Basel. The heirs of the count, who died in 1375, subsequently fell out with the bishop. In 1376 the battle of Schwadernau finally took place, in which the count's heirs were victorious. Schwadernau and Nidau were then "Kyburgian". In 1388 Nidau - and with it Schwadernau - was taken over by the Bernese and has belonged to the Canton of Bern ever since.
The spelling of Schwadernau has changed several times over the years and was recorded as follows:
- 1269 Swadernova
- 1270 Swadernowe
- 1280 Swadernouve
