history
In Roman times, Studen was called Petinesca . This settlement was built by the Romans as a military station in 58 BC and was located on the important connecting road from Aventicum via Salodurum to Augusta Raurica . The road through the Jura also branched off there. The station was occupied until 380 AD.
Petinesca also had a walled (pre-Roman ramparts, of which the western Celtic ramparts are best preserved) temple complex with three gates, it comprised two groups of three Gallo-Roman temple temples as well as three chapels and a priest's house (built in the 1st and 2nd centuries ). In a document dated November 12, 1257, Petinesca is first mentioned with the current name of Studen. Many of the excavation finds can be viewed in the Schwab Museum in Biel.
