NMB New Museum Biel
The NMB Neues Museum Biel - Art History Archeology was created in 2012 when the two museums Schwab and Neuhaus were merged. It is a museum for archeology, art, industrial history, literature, film and home decor on the Schüsspromenade in Biel , Switzerland .
Museum Schwab (1873–2011)
In 1865, the Biel-based pile dwelling researcher and collector Friedrich Schwab (1803-1896) bequeathed his extensive collection, which included archaeological finds and weapons, as a legacy to the city of Biel. The city of Biel took the donation as an opportunity to build a museum. According to plans by the architect Friedrich Ludwig von Rütte (1829–1903), the Schwab Museum was built in 1871–1873, the rotunda of which is reminiscent of that of the old National Library in Paris. After the Musée Rath in Geneva and the Natural History Museum in Basel, this was the third purpose-built museum in Switzerland. Initially, the Schwab Museum was a multi-branch building that, in addition to archeology, also displayed art, historical objects and scientific preparations. After a reorganization and renovation, it was reopened in 1947 as a pure archeology museum. The non-archaeological collections were put into storage. The city of Biel was responsible for the museum until the end of 2011.
Museum Neuhaus (1985-2011)
The Neuhaus Museum used the former main building of the Indiane-Manufactory Verdan-Neuhaus (founded in 1747, closed in 1842). The last owner of the property Dora Neuhaus (1889–1975) bequeathed it to a museum to be founded. In 1983 the Robert Collection Foundation opened the “Musée Robert” on the first floor of the west wing, which was dedicated to the natural history work of the family of painters. In 1985 the restored factory owner's apartment on the second floor was made accessible as the "Museum Neuhaus". From 1992 to 1995, the entire row of houses on the Schüsspromenade / Seevorstadt could be converted into a multi-branch museum. The Robert Collection Foundation was integrated into the new museum operations. The Karl and Robert Walser Collection and the William Piasio Cinécollection were included in the museum as deposits from the Swiss Gottfried Keller Foundation and the City of Biel. The enlarged Neuhaus Museum started operations at the end of 1995.
NMB Neues Museum Biel (from 2012)
In 2001, the Biel City Council initiated a process of reorganizing the Biel museum landscape. The result in 2012 was the merger of the two museums Schwab and Neuhaus - with the involvement of the Robert Collection Foundation - to form the “NMB Neues Museum Biel”. The multi-branch house for history, art and archeology is based on uniform administration and management. It is located at Seevorstadt 52 not far from Biel's old town. The museum houses six permanent exhibitions: The archaeological window of the region, the industrial history of the city of Biel, pictures and writings by the painters and poets Karl and Robert Walser and the Robert family of painters, the collection of objects on the subjects of photography and film by William Piasio and as a residential museum the restored apartment of the founder Dora Neuhaus (1889–1975).
All exhibitions are documented in German and French. The museum also has a café with a garden.
