Location of the municipality

Müntschemier ( French Monsmier ) is a municipality in the Seeland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland . Müntschemier belongs to the parish of Ins , the civic parish was dissolved in 1876. The place name - most likely derived from the Romanesque word "montem" (mountain) - was first mentioned in history in 1185 as "Munchimu".

Müntschemier is located in the Grosse Moos , a particularly fertile area with almost black soils in the Bernese Seeland . The neighboring communities starting from the north in a clockwise direction are Brüttelen , Treiten , Kerzers , Ried bei Kerzers , Murten , Mont-Vully and Ins .

history

The Erlach monastery owned property in Müntschemier in 1185. In 1474 the village came to Bern as part of the Erlach lordship and was administered in the Erlach Landvogtei . After the fire of 1827, the village was partially rebuilt. The financial burden caused by the correction of the waters of the Jura between 1874 and 1883 forced the civic community to sell their commons . The civic community dissolved in 1876. The cultivation of the moss and the construction of the state road through the large moss and the railway line Bern-Neuchâtel in 1902 led to population growth at the beginning of the 20th century. Improvements and amalgamation of goods made Müntschemier an important vegetable growing area in Switzerland.
