Ried bei Kerzers (often just Ried or Ried b. Kerzers , formerly Oberried , see “Name and Fusions”) is a political municipality in the lake district (French: District du Lac) in the canton of Friborg in Switzerland . The French name of the municipality is Essert . Ried bei Kerzers should therefore not be confused with the villages of Oberried FR and Essert FR , which are located in the municipality of Le Mouret .

On January 1, 2006, the previously independent neighboring community in the east of Agriswil ( Agrimoine in French ) was incorporated into Ried bei Kerzers.

Ried bei Kerzers lies at 511  m above sea level. M. , 6 km east-northeast of the district capital Murten and 2.5 km south-southwest of Kerzers ( linear distance ). The clustered village extends on the edge of a high plateau south of the Grosse Moos , in the northern Freiburg Central Plateau .

The area of ​​the 7.6 km² municipal area includes a section of the Grosse Moos and the adjacent Molasse heights . The southern part of the municipality with the village is occupied by a high plateau, which is bordered to the east by the valley of the Biberen and to the west by the hollow of the Galmizbach. The plateau is subdivided by small valleys and hills. In the south, the community area extends to the Lochwald , to the briar wood , in which at 544  m above sea level. M. the highest point of Ried bei Kerzers is reached, and over the height of Riederen to Guggmärliwald .

To the north, the municipality extends into the agriculturally intensively used level of the Grosse Moos , which is traversed by the Biberenkanal and the Great Canal . The municipality of Rieder encompasses the Tommen , Teufi , Längenmatten and Agriswilmoos corridors from south to north . In 1997, 11% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 7% for forests and woodlands and 82% for agriculture.

Ried bei Kerzers includes the village of Agriswil , the hamlet of Gurzelen ( 460  m above sea level ) on the southern edge of the Grosse Moos and a few individual farms. Neighboring communities of Ried bei Kerzers are Kerzers , Gurbrü , Ferenbalm , Gempenach , Murten , Galmiz and an exclave of Murten in the canton of Friborg and Müntschemier and Gurbrü in the canton of Bern .

With 1183 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Ried bei Kerzers is one of the smaller communities in the canton of Friborg. 690 of them live in Ried and 152 in Agriswil. 91.3% of the residents speak German, 3.2% speak Portuguese and 2.9% speak French (as of 2000). The population of Ried bei Kerzers was 695 in 1900 (including Agriswil). During the 20th century, the population fluctuated between 620 and 690 people. Only since 1980 (608 inhabitants) has there been significant population growth.

Until the second half of the 20th century, Ried bei Kerzers was a village dominated by agriculture . Even today, the have farming , the vegetables , the fruit-growing and cattle breeding an important role in the employment structure of the population.

Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. A commercial zone has developed on the main road from Murten to Kerzers. Today in Ried bei Kerzers there are companies in the construction and transport industry, food processing, machine tool construction, natural stone processing, as well as carpentry and precision engineering workshops. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. Many employed people are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Murten and Kerzers regions and in the Bern agglomeration .

The community is well developed in terms of traffic, although it is located away from the major thoroughfares on a connecting road from Kerzers to Ulmiz . The nearest connection to the A1 motorway (Bern-Lausanne), which crosses the municipality, is around 2 km from the town center. The Postbus course , which runs from Kerzers to Düdingen , connects Ried bei Kerzers to the public transport network.

school-system

Until the beginning of June, the Ried children attended primary school in the ABGRU, a former school association of the villages of Agriswil, Gempenach , Ried and Ulmiz (the village of Büchslen used to be part of it, hence the "B"). Ried has its own school house, which was used by certain levels of the ABGRU. Ried (including Agriswil) is now part of the Kerzers school district, but the kindergarten and primary school students (up to sixth grade) continue to be taught in Ried. Once primary school has been completed, the children from Ried switch to the Kerzers orientation school.

history

The municipality of Ried bei Kerzers was settled very early, which was proven by finds of graves from the Bronze Age and the Hallstatt Age . During Roman times there were two manors here, which were destroyed when the Alemanni invaded around 260 AD.

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1277 under the name Rieden ; From 1318, Esser is the first to come down to a French version. Since the Middle Ages, Ried bei Kerzers has been under the rule of Murten. In 1475, the village came under the joint administration of the estates of Bern and Freiburg as part of the bailiwick of Murten. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Ried bei Kerzers came to the canton of Friborg. During the Helvetic Republic and the following period it belonged to the Murten district before it was incorporated into the lake district in 1848 with the new cantonal constitution.

Name and mergers

Until 1902 the village was called Oberried bei Murten and was officially called Oberried (lake) . From 1902 to 1911 the official name was Ried . However, because this also led to confusion, the current community name Ried bei Kerzers was introduced in 1912 .

As part of the community mergers supported by the canton of Friborg since 2000, the previously independent Agriswil was incorporated into Ried bei Kerzers with effect from January 1, 2006 .

Attractions

Some characteristic farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the town center. Ried bei Kerzers has one of the oldest preserved granaries in the canton, dating from the 16th century. The oven house, built in 1831, is still occasionally used for baking bread today. Ried bei Kerzers does not have its own church, it belongs proportionally to the parishes of Murten and Ferenbalm.

Others

The family roots of US President Barack Obama on his mother's side can be traced back to Hans Gutknecht (* 1692) from Ried bei Kerzers. The community therefore made the US president an honorary citizen in 2010.
