geography

Jeuss lies at 544  m above sea level. M. , four and a half kilometers southeast of the district capital Murten ( linear distance ). The street village extends on the northern edge of the broad valley lowlands of the Biberen , on the southern edge of the Galmwald , in the northern Freiburg Central Plateau .

The area of 1.8 square kilometers former large municipal area comprises a portion of the glacial Rhonegletscher overmolded Molassehöhen between the Morat and Saanen valley . The southern border runs along the beavers that have been channeled and straightened here. From here, the municipality extends northwards over the Biberenmatte (up to 1 km wide flat valley floor) and to the adjacent heights in the Galmwald. At the edge of the forest of Ober Eichelried near Galmguet is 590  m above sea level. M. reached the highest point of Jeuss. In 1997, 8% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 10% for forests and woodlands and 82% for agriculture.

Jeuss owns the Galmguet farmstead ( 581  m above sea level ) on the southern slope of Ober Eichelried as well as some individual farms. Neighboring communities to Jeuss were Gurmels , Cressier and Salvenach, as well as the State Forest Galm area that was not part of any community .

population

With 415 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2015) Jeuss was one of the small communities in the canton of Friborg. 90.9% of the residents are German-speaking, 4.1% French-speaking and 1.8% speak Portuguese (as of 2000). In 1900 Jeuss had a population of 216. In the course of the 20th century the population fluctuated between 230 and 260 inhabitants. Only since 1980 (239 inhabitants) has there been significant population growth, with the number of inhabitants almost doubling within 25 years.

economy

Up until the second half of the 20th century, Jeuss was a village dominated by agriculture . Even today, arable farming , fruit growing and animal husbandry have an important place in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector, including in companies in the electrical industry and scaffolding. Jeuss has been the location of the Galmguet retirement and nursing home since 1907, which serves all the communities in the area. A new building was built in 1986, and further expansion took place from 2017 to 2020. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Many employed people are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Murten and Freiburg regions.

traffic

The former community is very well developed in terms of traffic, although it is located away from the larger thoroughfares on a connecting road from Salvenach to Laupen . The nearest connection to the A1 motorway (Bern-Lausanne) is around 6 km from the town center. Jeuss is connected to the public transport network by a post bus line that runs from Murten to Düdingen .

history

The first written mention of the place took place in 1340 under the name Juentes . In 1432 the name Juus appeared and the current place name has been handed down since the 16th century. In the Middle Ages, Jeuss was part of the property of the Counts of Thierstein . Later it came to the rule of Murten. In 1475, the village came under the joint administration of the estates of Bern and Freiburg as part of the bailiwick of Murten. In 1765 numerous houses were destroyed in a fire. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798) Jeuss came to the canton of Friborg. During the Helvetic Republic and the following period it belonged to the Murten district before it was incorporated into the lake district in 1848 with the new cantonal constitution.
