About this picture
w

The State Forest Galm ( French Forêt cantonale de Galm , Italian Foresta statale di Galm ) is the only area in Switzerland that is not assigned to any municipality , along with the larger lakes . They belong directly to the canton, in contrast to the municipalities in the canton of Ticino , which are jointly owned by several municipalities.

geography

The Galm area is under the direct sovereignty of the Canton of Friborg . It has an area of 257 hectares (2.57 km²) and is located in the lake district . The FSO no. is: 2391 (until December 31, 2003: 2285)

History and creation

The Galmwald was released for use in 1342 by the then sovereign, Count Aymon of Savoy . However, this led to severe devastation from excessive logging and forest pasture (especially with pigs). Under the influence of new forestry teachings, the federal towns of Bern and Friborg took the Galmwald forest under joint administration in the 18th century and controlled and permitted only partial use. Ultimately, a third of the forest later had to be fenced in and excluded from any use. With the act of mediation , Napoléon Bonaparte assigned the Galmwald to the canton of Friborg in 1803. In this way it became a state forest and ultimately a Swiss unique. Because until today the area has not been allocated to any municipality.

Residents

The bunker in which the only inhabitant of the Galmwald lived.

Officially, nobody lives in the Galmwald. Until the 1970s, however, Michel «Ärnschtu» (Ernst) Gyoth lived there for a quarter of a century. Because he lived in a bunker , he received the takeover of Bunker-Ärnschtu. The bunker in which the I. Sappeur Company III / 20 served during World War I is located on the eastern side of the forest near the village of Salvenach .
