geography

Misery Courtion is 580  m above sea level. M. , 9 km northwest of the canton capital Friborg (beeline). The double community extends on a high plateau east of the Chandon , in the Molasse hill country of the northern Freiburg Central Plateau .

The area of 11.4 square kilometers large municipal area comprises a portion of the glacial Rhonegletscher overmolded Molassehöhen between the Broyeebene in the northwest and the Saanen valley in the east. The main part of the area is taken up by a slightly undulating high plateau. This is drained to the east via the village stream from Courtepin to the Saane. To the west several small streams flow towards the Chandon, which with its valley forms the western border of Misery-Courtion. In the north, the municipal soil extends over the height of the Mont ( 632  m above sea level ) to the forest areas of Mont Levant ( 603  m above sea level ) and Les Roseires . To the south the plateau rises towards the forest heights Bois de Cudre , Bois de la Corbaz and Bois de l'Hôpital . The highest point is 670  m above sea level. M. reached in the Bois de la Corbaz. In 1997, 6% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 18% for forests and woodlands and 76% for agriculture.

The municipality of Misery-Courtion consists of the following districts:

  • Misery (German: Miserach), 581  m above sea level M. , former municipal area 2.3 km², on the western edge of the plateau above the valley of the village stream of Grolley
  • Courtion (German: Curtion), 576  m above sea level. M. , former municipal area 2.1 km², on the western edge of the plateau above the valley of the Chandon
  • Cormérod (German: Kormerat), 600  m above sea level M. , former municipal area 2.8 km², slightly elevated on the northern edge of the plateau, on the southern slope of the Mont
  • Cournillens (German: Kurlin), 575  m above sea level M. , former municipal area 4.1 km², on the plateau, at the northern foot of the Bois de la Corbaz.

Numerous individual farms also belong to the community. The neighboring municipalities of Misery-Courtion are Courtepin , La Sonnaz , Belfaux , Grolley and Belmont-Broye in the canton of Friborg and Avenches in the canton of Vaud .

Misery-Courtion was a predominantly agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . Even today, arable farming , fruit growing and animal husbandry have an important place in the income structure of the population. Other jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector, including in information technology, horticulture, wood processing, scaffolding, metal construction and an antique carpentry workshop. The water power of the Chandon was previously used to power mills. A large gravel pit is being exploited in the Chandon valley. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Many employed people are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Freiburg and Murten regions.

The community is very well developed in terms of transport. It is located on the connecting road from Freiburg to Avenches . The closest connection to the A1 motorway (Bern-Lausanne) is around 6 km from Misery. All the localities of the municipality are connected to the public transport network by the Transports publics Fribourgeois bus line , which runs from Freiburg to Cournillens. Misery is also accessed by the bus route between Freiburg and Domdidier .

history

The municipality of Misery-Courtion was settled very early. Remains of a Roman estate and a votive tablet in honor of Mercury were found at Misery . Another manor with important mosaics was at Cormérod.

The first written mention of Misery took place in 1176 under the name Misirie . The term Miserie appeared in the 12th century, Misiry in 1668 and Miseri in 1781 , while the German version Miserach has been handed down since 1578. The place name is derived from the Gallo-Roman surname Miserius . Courtion is first recorded as Cortiun in 1138 . Further spellings are Cortium (1148) and Curtis Teudonis (12th century) in the meaning of Hof des Teudo .

While Misery was initially part of the Montagny lordship , Courtion formed its own lordship. The noble family von Courtion is mentioned from the 12th to the 14th century. From 1460 both villages came into the possession of the Lords of Faucigny. In 1442 Misery and Courtion came under the sovereignty of Freiburg and from then on belonged to the Old Landscape (Spitalpanner). After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), the villages belonged to the then Friborg district of Avenches during the Helvetic period and from 1803 to the district of Friborg, before they were incorporated into the lake district in 1848 with the new cantonal constitution. Trial drilling for oil took place at Courtion in 1960 , but were unsuccessful.

In 1996, the residents of the municipalities of Misery, Courtion, Cormérod and Cournillens decided to merge. As a result, one of the first major municipal mergers in the canton of Friborg took place on January 1, 1997. The new parish was given the double name Misery-Courtion.
