Büchslen was until December 31, 2012 a political municipality in the lake district (French: District du Lac) of the canton of Friborg in Switzerland . The French name of the municipality is Buchillon . On January 1, 2013, Büchslen was merged with the city of Murten to form the municipality of Murten.

geography

Büchslen lies at 511  m above sea level. M. , five kilometers east-northeast of the district capital Murten (linear distance ). The farming village extends on a wide saddle east of the Murtenwald, at the height south of the Grosse Moos , in the northern Freiburg Central Plateau .

The area of the 1.6 km² former municipal area covers a section of the Molasse heights between the Grosse Moos in the northwest and the Saane valley in the east. The central part is occupied by the Sattel and Büchslen, which lies between the height of the Murtenwald and the Bruyerenholz (at 544  m above sea level, the highest point in the former municipality). To the northwest, the former municipality extends into the catchment area of the village stream from Galmiz to Rufholz . In the southeast the area extends to the Bodenacher plateau ( 500  m above sea level ). In 1997, 9% of the former municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 13% for forests and woodlands and 78% for agriculture.

Some individual farms belong to Büchslen. The neighboring communities of Büchslen were Galmiz , Ried bei Kerzers , Gempenach , Lurtigen and Murten .

population

With 171 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2012) Büchslen was one of the small communities in the canton of Friborg. The population of Büchslen was 191 in 1850 and 164 in 1900. In the course of the 20th century the population fluctuated between 100 and 150 inhabitants. Only since 1970 (102 inhabitants) has a significant increase in population been recorded.

languages

96.8% of the residents are German-speaking, 2.0% French-speaking and 1.3% speak Italian (as of 2000). This means that Büchslen is almost exclusively German-speaking today. Various field names (e.g. briar wood) suggest an earlier French-speaking population, which probably made up the majority of the population in the 17th century.

economy

Büchslen was a predominantly agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . Even today, arable farming , fruit growing and animal husbandry have an important place in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. In the last few decades the village has also developed into a residential community. Many employed people are therefore commuters who mainly work in the Murten and Kerzers regions and in the Bern area.

traffic

The former municipality is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the main road 1 from Bern to Lausanne . The nearest connection to the A1 motorway (Bern-Lausanne) is around 3 km from the town center. Büchslen has no connection to the public transport network.

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 961 under the name Buoch . Later, the Romanic names Buschillion (1339) and Buchillon (1453) appeared. The current name and Bichslen have been handed down since the 18th century . The place name goes back to the Old High German word buchha (beech).

Büchslen had belonged to the Payerne Priory since the 12th century. Later it came to the rule of Murten. From 1484 Büchslen was under the jurisdiction of the Murten bailiffs, which were jointly administered by the Bern and Freiburg estates. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), the village came to the canton of Friborg. During the Helvetic Republic and the following period it belonged to the Murten district before it was incorporated into the lake district in 1848 with the new cantonal constitution. It was not until 1831 that Büchslen became a politically independent municipality.

Attractions

The Büchslen schoolhouse was built at the beginning of the 19th century. Büchslen does not have its own church; it belongs to the parish of Ferenbalm in the canton of Bern.
