The Biberen ( French La Bibera ) is a 24 km long right tributary of the Broye in the canton of Friborg of Switzerland . It drains a section of the northern Freiburg Central Plateau and belongs to the catchment area of the Rhine . The catchment area of the beavers has an area of about 50 km².

Surname

The French name of the river is La Bibera ; In addition to the dialect beaver , the term Bibera is occasionally used in the German-speaking area of the canton of Friborg .

geography

The headwaters of the Biberen are located at around 570 m above sea level. M. on the parish of Courtepin . With its upper course through the Molasse hill country between Lake Murten and the Saane Valley, shaped by the Ice Age Rhone Glacier , the Biberen flows north-east parallel to the Saane . It usually moves in a 500 m to 1 km wide valley depression, which formerly formed a moor area and was only meliorated at the beginning of the 20th century.

At Schönenbühl, a district of the municipality of Kriechenwil , the Biberen turns north; the valley has now become a little narrower, but still has a flat floodplain. The border between the cantons of Friborg and Bern runs along the Biberen, and at Biberen the brook briefly crosses over to Bernese soil.

Another striking change in direction is the Biberen south of Kerzers . It now flows to the west and reaches the level of the Grosse Moos . On the bottom 6 km of the route, the stream was canalized and straightened as part of the amelioration of the Grosse Moos. The course of the river here is called the beaver canal . In Bellechasse first lead of the left Galmizkanal , then to the right of the Grand Canal ( Great Channel ). North of Sugiez (municipality of Bas-Vully ), at the eastern foot of Mont Vully , the Biberenkanal flows at 430 m above sea level. M. into the Canal de la Broye (Broyekanal), the canalised section of the Broye between Lake Murten and Lake Neuchâtel .

The gradient is less than 1% along the entire stretch of the river. The Biberen is characterized by a pluvial runoff regime , with the mean runoff at Kerzers being 0.6 m³ / s. It has only a few short side streams.

use

With the improvement measures in the Biberental between Courtaman and Liebistorf , the stream was channeled and straightened. Since the late 1990s, revitalizations have been carried out at various locations in this section. Between Liebistorf and the Jerisbergmühle, the water power of the Biberen has been used to operate mills and sawmills since the late Middle Ages . In the area of the Jerisbergmühle, a longer side channel was created that led away the water to the mill. With the conversion to electricity in the last sawmill and mill, whose operation was still based on water power, the beavers are now flowing again in their natural bed. Despite the earlier use of water power, the section between Schönenbühl and Jerisbergmühle was preserved in an almost natural state.

The lower reaches from Kerzers has been completely straightened since the correction of the Jura waters . The water is used here for irrigation purposes.
