Jens (in local dialect Jäiss [ ˈjæi̯sˑ ]) is a village with its own community of residents and civic community in the Seeland administrative district of the Swiss canton of Bern .

geography

The neighboring communities are Merzligen , Bellmund , Port , Aegerten , Studen (BE) , Worben and Kappelen .

history

The place name is first mentioned in 1228 as Iens . It probably goes back to the Latin juncta (s) 'connected', the Romanesque continuation of which can denote the confluence of two bodies of water, a fork in the road or a Juchart .

The village came to Bern in 1398 and, together with Worben, formed the Jens judicial district in the Landvogtei Nidau .

population

Jens is 96.1% a German-speaking community. The most widespread religion in Jens is Protestantism. In addition to members of free churches, some residents are Catholic or non-denominational.

politics

The voting shares of the parties in the 2019 National Council election were: SVP 30.4%, BDP 21.3%, SP 15.0%, FDP 5.3%, EPP 4.3%, glp 4.2%, GPS 10.8 %, Pirates 1.4%, CVP 0.7%, DU 1.4%.
