Meienried is a municipality in the Seeland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland .

geography

Meienried lies in the Seeland , where the Alte Aare and the Nidau-Büren Canal meet. This area is called Häftli . Despite the small size, the community is divided into two parts, the Oberfar and Unterfar. Meienried borders on Safnern , Büren on the Aare , Dotzigen and Scheuren . In the northeast of the municipality there is a small quarry pond, called Meienriedseeli . In summer it is a popular seaside resort because the lake warms up quickly.

population

Meienried is German-speaking (93.22%). A minority speaks French (5.08%). The population consists of 23 households.

The municipal council consists of five members. In addition to the resident community, there is a civic community together with Scheuren, the civic community Scheuren-Meienried .

Meienried's economy consists of five farms, which together employ 13 people. The service sector offers another four jobs.

history

Before the 1st  Jura water correction , Meienried was particularly badly affected by floods. At that time the Aare flowed together with the Zihl . The two parts of the village were built at two ferry locations , Meienried was a traffic junction. After Dotzigen , the ferry service on the Alte Aare led to the landing stage at the level stone .

In the Unterfar part of the village is the former galley inn , which was built around 1770. Johann Rudolf Schneider , one of the main initiators of the 1st Jura waters correction, was born in this house in 1804. He later became a Grand Councilor and National Councilor and was a member of the Bern government from 1838 to 1850.

Meienried is recorded in the electoral archive of the canton of Bern together with the neighboring municipality of Büren an der Aare .

The voting shares of the parties in the 2019 National Council election were: SVP 33.7%, SP 12.8%, BDP 10.9%, FDP 9.4%, glp 12.0%, GPS 9.5%, EPP 5.2 %, CVP 0.7%, EDU 1.3%, DU 0.8%.
